The Moving Centre As An Anchor

The Moving Centre As An Anchor

The body is always in the present. Our hearts and minds may wander, but the body is always right here right now.

For this reason, the moving centre can serve as a reliable sort of anchor for presence. It is very useful to ‘return to the body’ immediately when we suddenly have a flash of self remembering, to ground us in the present as we gently bring our hearts and minds back from wherever they were.

Observation will show us that whenever we are immersed in thought or in some kind of emotion, that is, whenever we are in imagination or are identified, there is a corresponding posture in the moving centre. Hunched shoulders, furrowed brow, tapping of fingers or some kind of fidgeting. Invariably, when there is tension in the emotional or intellectual centres, there will be tension in the moving centre.

We can definitely use this to our advantage when we remember ourselves.

The next time you are impatiently waiting in the slowest line at the grocery store, try to notice your posture and observe the tension in your moving centre. Simply adjusting to a relaxed and erect posture can have an astonishing effect on one’s state.
